Description

Time for another yokai! This one is called Myōbu, and it's a white fox with supernatural powers. In Japanese mythology, some kitsune (foxes) are evil or simply like to play practical jokes on people. Others are benevolent, and those of a white coat serve as messengers to the Shintō God "Inari". In Japan, people will go to shrines of Inari (the most famous destination being Fushimi Inari shrine near Kyoto) and pray to fox statues, often leaving an offering of Inari zushi, a favorite food of foxes. In return it is expected that the fox will plead with Inari on their behalf. This one here is seen holding a key to the rice granary in its mouth, as Inari is the God of rice, among other things. It is said the name Myōbu was bestowed on a particularly helpful fox at Fushimi Inari by a member of the Heian court. As thanks, she gave the fox her court title. Prints available here.
